AD 1610:
Galileo discovers four large moons circling Jupiter, which had already been in existence for eons. This discovery supported Copernicus’ work, which placed the Earth circling the Sun, instead of the whole universe circling the Earth.
The Church condemned both Copernicus and Galileo as heretics for teaching against the Church’s approved “proven” doctrine. The Church concluded that “heliocentrism (I.e. the model in which the Earth revolves around the Sun) was foolish, absurd, and heretical since it contradicted Holy Scripture.”
Galileo later was commanded to “abandon completely…the opinion that the sun stands still at the center…and the Earth moves, and henceforth not to hold, teach, or defend it in any way whatsoever, either orally or in writing.” Wow! And we thought that being canceled was something that was just invented!
AD 2021:
Those four moons still circle Jupiter, and even more have been found. But “heretics” against the official “Church” narrative are still canceled. To Galileo, we apologize.
